Trump Banned Harvard from Enrolling International Students

The Trump administration has revoked Harvard University’s certification to enroll new international students under the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). This decision came after Harvard refused to comply with federal demands, including handing over student disciplinary records and protest footage. Without SEVP certification, Harvard can no longer sponsor student visas, meaning no new international students can be admitted under current rules.

Current international students at Harvard must now transfer to other universities if they wish to maintain their legal status in the U.S. Students who have completed their graduation requirements this semester can still receive their degrees, but those in the middle of their studies or on Optional Practical Training (OPT) face immediate challenges. Transferring while on OPT could terminate their work authorization, adding further pressure to act quickly.

This action follows escalating tensions between Harvard and the Trump administration, largely over the university’s refusal to shut down pro-Palestinian protests and dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem accused Harvard of creating a hostile campus environment. The university has called the move unlawful and is fighting the decision in court, while students and families are left to navigate the uncertain fallout.
